While you don’t want to be that person scrambling to redecorate your home every time a new fad moves into town, it’s fun to see what’s trending and if it works for you. Let’s check in with some current design trends for ideas you can inject to keep your home looking fresh and current.
First, what are trends (at least some) designers say are past their freshness date? FYI: you don’t have to agree!
What’s Out
- White on white, especially kitchens (Conversely, some see white kitchens as a classic that will never go out of style. So take your pick.)
- Color matched furniture (Matching furniture to your color palette is not as desirable as using neutral or contrasting colors, according to many designers now.)
- Gray (Don’t go into heart failure here. Just ditch the gray-on-gray, and see “Warm neutrals” below.)
- Animal prints (The word on the street is “small doses only’, like pillows.)
- Word signs (Live. Love. Hug often–just don’t talk about it on your walls. Hang personal art that talks about you, instead.
- Boucle’ (True, everyone wanted this loopy wool yesterday. Natural textural fabrics are still in, so if you like it, keep it. Maybe just don't upholster your whole bed in it. Console yourself with some of the latest performance fabrics being used everywhere, like amazing new velvets.)
- Pale wood/Scandi look (To each his own, but apparently the blonde wood mania is waning. Richer, darker woods are more in favor now.)
- Millennial pink (While still good for girl nurseries, pick something newer like some of the fresh yellows or soft greens that are so much more today.)
- Edison bulbs (Opt for statement lighting instead.)
- Fast furnishings (Today’s eco-conscious culture emphasizes sustainability over throw-away. So enjoy some retro or good antique pieces in your home and save them from the landfill. Or buy well-made pieces that will last for years.)
What’s In?
Looking ahead, the forecast is fresh, warm and natural-feeling. Some recent and emerging decor trends include:
- Arches and curves in both architecture and furnishings. They feel soft, calming and inviting. It’s very easy to incorporate curvy pieces like mirrors into your current decor.
- Artisan accessories (ceramics, wovens, and wood) and finishes (plaster, for example). Think quality and authenticity. See “Fast furnishings” above.
- Warm neutrals, brown, and warm-toned colors. Gray may not be completely “out”, but designers increasingly pick warm tones over cool grays. Do you have grays you want to keep? Pair them with warm neutrals or color to bring them up to date. Choose off-white, ecru, and ivory, for example, over gray tints.
- Biophilic design, or bringing the outdoors inside, continues to be hugely popular. Think plants, natural finishes and fabrics, nature-inspired accessories and minimal, earthly-friendly processing. Earth-tone colors in paints and materials predominate.
- Cane detailing gives textural interest to furniture and cabinetry, as does wood fluting.
- Color and the other means of personal expression in our homes is increasingly popular. We don't want our living spaces to look like everyone else's, and apparently many of us are ready to bring in some personality with color.
- Checkerboard is having a moment. If you're not ready to commit to checkered bathroom tile or kitchen floors, even a new handbag can get you a taste of this trend.
