As we look forward to fun and memorable fall gatherings, let’s give some thought to creating beautiful and inviting tablescapes for our families and visiting friends. Embrace autumnal colors, textures, and natural materials for a table setting that wows your guests.
Begin with your centerpiece
The centerpiece is the focal point of your table and sets the colors and mood of the tablescape. Fall is a great time to indulge in rich, deep tones. And here’s some happy news if you’re not a fan of orange: there are many new fall colorways for you! Have you seen peach, coral, rosy pinks, blues, purple, and burgundy in fresh new autumn combinations?

When you’ve decided on your color scheme, you’re ready to choose a vessel for your centerpiece. Maybe a rustic bowl, a glass or ceramic vase, pitcher, or basket–it’s up to you. Then pick elements for your arrangement of different sizes, shapes and textures: flowers, succulents, pumpkins and stems (leaves, berries and natural materials) in colors that support your look. You can even mix real and faux flowers and foliage.

Your centerpiece should be big enough to command attention, but not so tall your guests can’t see one another and talk.
Other ideas for centerpieces:
- a large lantern (maybe three sizes of lanterns arranged together)
- candlesticks and florals (safely use flickering flameless candles on the table)
- dough bowl or basket piled with real or faux pumpkins or other fall fruits and vegetables
- a cluster of vases with a single type of flower, mixed colorful autumn blooms, or branches with fall leaves (have you tried hot-gluing faux fall leaves to branches from your yard? It works.)
- pots of real plants like colorful coleus, interspersed with similarly-colored pumpkins of various sizes
If your table is a rectangle, carry your theme and colors down the table on either side of your centerpiece with placement of additional leaves, small pumpkins, acorns or jar candles.

Set your places
Go ahead, be festive with your place settings. Create a memorable table with a beautiful tablecloth and/or runner, textural placemats, striking chargers, and lovely plates and glassware. Polish up the silver and pull out the cloth napkins. Tie up napkins and flatware with twine or ribbon and sprigs of berry stems. Create placeholders by tying tags to mini pumpkins. Feel free to mix, not match. Layering different but coordinating dishes is very IN.
