The Power of Perfect Home Lighting

The Power of Perfect Home Lighting

When decorating our homes, we often get excited about options in furniture, art, and accessories. But there’s an important aspect of our home’s mood and function that can’t be overlooked: lighting.

The layers of lighting in our rooms both establish and support the use of each area. We generally find four kinds of lighting in our homes.

  • General or ambient lighting

  • Task lighting

  • Accent lighting

  • Mood lighting

1. Ambient lighting

First, ambient lighting is where we begin lighting a room. That’s the general light provided by overhead fixtures, whether recessed lights in the ceiling or fixtures mounted to the ceiling. The effect is usually soft and even.

In a dining room, a chandelier might serve as a source of ambient light.

2. Task lighting

Secondly, task lighting illuminates a particular area for a certain purpose. In a kitchen, pendants over an island, for example, provide lighting for food prep. A pair of pendants over the children’s homework table illuminates the surface for school work.

In an area used for reading or study, table lamps and floor lamps are up to the task. And of course, choices are not limited solely to function–style is critical, as well. Just the right lamp in a spot can totally make the room!

While kitchens and study areas require task lighting, consider also–the bathroom mirror.

Why settle for a builder grade fixture casting harsh shadows over a vanity when there is the option to flank mirrors with amazing wall sconces? Not only will they provide style unlimited, but we know that face-height bulbs are best for makeup application!

In a family room or dining room, the soft glow of wall sconces gives subtle, indirect light.

3. Accent Lighting

The third layer of home illumination, accent lighting, can serve to spotlight a feature in your home–or it can be a feature in itself. Lamps are a typical type of accent lighting.

At times, the functions of task lighting and accent lighting overlap. Choosing accent lamps--that’s where some decorating delight begins! Lamps perfectly perform as accent lighting.

4. Mood Lighting

How we would like for a space to feel–inviting, restful, playful–is its mood. And mood lighting is not actually a separate category of lighting. Really, any of the above types of lighting can be used to establish a mood for tasks, occasions or activities.

A dimmer on a chandelier helps create the setting for an intimate meal. Wall sconces in a family room will contribute to a welcoming ambience. Accent lamps can brighten a dark corner and make it a welcoming spot for reading or conversation. Even lanterns and candles contribute to the mood of each space.
