Using Black and White for Fall Decorating

It’s classic. It’s crisp. It’s black and white for fall decor!

Can you even remember when you first saw, say, black and white buffalo check used in decor? A staple of the timeless farmhouse look, we never tire of its graphic good looks. Not only checks and plaids, but black and white polka dots and black and white stripes. Had you considered that they’re the perfect complement to bright orange fall settings? Have a look!

On shelving, for example, maybe you already have some white accessories (serveware, frames, finials). Just layer in some black and white signage, word blocks, plant pots or vases, and pumpkins. Then add a few pops of orange and you have a perky fall arrangement!

Need more smart and stylish shelving prompts? How about black and white canisters, plates, pumpkins and pillows interspersed with bright orange velvet pumpkins under glass? Or amped up by a trio of orange vases on a leaf tray? Shop your house and see what you might have to build a vignette like this.

A fireplace can be decked for fall with black and white pumpkin plaques and some 3D orange pumpkins and greenery as well. Top it off with a black-and-white check and burlap ribbon garland.  Simple and sassy!

Don’t have much black and white yet? You can add it in with a variety of carefully chosen accessories--cups, candles, coasters, or creamers. Or napkins, jars, and teapots. And of course, pumpkins!

Are you getting inspired to incorporate black and white into your fall decor?

In your home, it might mean a sleek black bench with cozy black and white pillows and throws.

Or possibly just a touch or two of black among your bright fall flowers. But we especially love black and white on the dining table.

Your black and white tableware and linens will benefit from the bright accents of orange, such as a velvet pumpkin garland down the b&w runner. Orange and black and white pumpkins piled on a tiered tray make a delightful centerpiece.

Black and white gingham plates would be lovely accessorized for any season. But for fall, we’re envisioning them layered with shiny black pumpkin salad plates around a centerpiece featuring orange pumpkins in oversized whitewashed lanterns and orange flowers in a black and white vase! Smart and sophisticated, this setting will command your guests’ admiration.

How have you used this exciting trend of black and white in your fall decorating?
