There are styles that speak instantly of a country or region–you would easily recognize Scandinavian or Mediterranean decor, for example. Though the United States has borrowed decor from many cultures, its signature style might well be American Western and–tempered with a modern mix–it’s currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity.
A Mint Julep client with mountain views recently incorporated elements of Western style into the design and furnishings of their home. While you don’t have to live in the shadow of mountains or on a cattle ranch to appreciate a Western vibe, you can bring in ranch-inspired touches that echo the great outdoors.
What makes decor “Western” and how to get it
Materials matter, and the more rugged, the better. Opt for:
- rough-hewn or reclaimed wood for accent walls, ceilings, beams or furniture
- leather and suede are quintessentially Western. A little fringe wouldn’t hurt.
- stone, terra cotta, and wrought iron. Deer antler chandelier, maybe?
- some cowhide is essential. Faux is fine. Cowhide pattern, too.
other patterns: Southwest motifs, plaids, and geometrics. A Southwest pattern rug is just the thing.
What about color?
Western decor takes its warm color palette from the landscape. To do it up Western, you’ll want to use earthy colors such as brown and tan, but also warm reds, creams, and greens like sage. Throw in a little turquoise here and there for fun.
Western art ideas
Vintage western movie posters are a natural choice, as are oversized rodeo, horse and livestock photos. Landscape paintings or photos of the American West would be great, as well as Native American themes. Antique or vintage-look pieces, cowhide accessories, baskets, rustic metal or wood sculptures, and pottery work well in Western decor and add textural interest.
Whoa there, pard’ner
Designer tip: Enjoy rustic details without going overboard on the theme. Mix your rustic with some modern elements or bring in a little Cowboy Glam. Balance heavy textures with modern lines and lighten up your wood-toned palette with glass and/or creamy upholstery.
