You spend nearly a third of your life in your bedroom, so why not make it lovely and tranquil – truly a “room of your dreams”?
Start on the road to tranquility with a thorough cleanout, removing anything from your bedroom that doesn’t contribute to a feeling of relaxation. (We’re looking at you, computer and workout equipment! Find a new home for these reminders of mental and physical exertions so your room speaks to you of rest.)
Clear off the dresser top and create a nice display of pretty and useful items. An intentional, pleasing arrangement of lamp, books, florals, and jewelry tray is much more calming than stacks of magazines, stray mugs, and folded laundry.
Next, try on clothing–ask a friend to help you–and keep only what you love that fits you right now. Whatever you can’t hang in the closet, organize and fold into your dresser. A roomy bedside chest with drawers will give you additional storage. Corral shoes and make assessments, then pick up a closet shoe rack and laundry hamper. Close the closet door and then consider your bedroom space.
A new, stylish bed could really kick off your bedroom redo. Do you like the rich tones of wood, or prefer a sumptuous upholstered headboard? Gone are the days of bedroom “suites” of furniture. Instead, mix it up by incorporating bedside tables that complement rather than match your bed. Choose a table or chest large enough to hold your lamp, phone, bedtime reading and something pretty–just because.
Don’t forget a bench or chair for slipping on your shoes. If you have room for a relaxing nook in your space, an accent table and reading chair would be perfect for morning coffee and catching up on the news.
When choosing bedding, a practical AND fashionable option is the duvet with stylish cover. To launder, simply slip the cover off the duvet. (You’ll swoon over custom bedding and pillow options at the Mint Julep!)
For your bedroom, choose paint colors that are restful. Nix loud yellows and reds in favor of restful blues, greens, and neutrals. Deep tones that wrap even the ceiling contribute to a relaxing cocoon effect.
Soothing art, a lovely pair of bedside lamps, and 3 or 5 decorative pillows will help to complete your oasis.
